Restoring a W & B Chopper

Hello, you princes of razor restoration, you kings of cutlery:

I recently bought a W&B chopper off eBay. It's not perfect, but it's pretty full @ 9/10 of an inch. I hope that it's salvagable, honeable, and (soon to be) usable!

Does anyone have any suggestions about treatment of the following problems before I muck it up?

1. Minor rust - The spine has a patch, and there's some rust where the razor sits in the scales. I was thinking that Maas and an electric toothbrush might help. Other ideas?

2. Honing - There are 1 mm chips out of the blade. It will need expert honing. I mucked up a TI that I got on eBay, so I won't trust myself to try again. Is Lynn still accepting blades to hone? Is there anyone else out there who will hone a razor for some $$$?

IMHO, if the "minor rust" you mention is truly rust it likely will take more than "maaz and an electric toothbrush" to get your blade in like-new condition. You might consider purchasing the razor restore CD that is available from a member here, urleebird. It has good info and basic technique for restoring blades to like-new condition. Who knows, you might even be able to salvage the TI you think you've mucked up! :wink:

Someone else will have to point you in the right direction for honing services to remove the nick.

I was able to restore the finish on a rusted W&B blade using automotive grades of wet/dry sandpaper (1000, 1500 and 2000), which you can get at Sears. Don't sand at the edge. By the time I finished with the 2000, all the rust was gone and it had a really bright shine. The Maas did the rest.
