Hone Box/Case Ideas Needed....

Hey all,

So I want to make some sort of a box or case for my nice little yellow/green thuringian stone. It never came with a box as the label is on the back of the stone. I've really come to love it lately and has seemed to trump my coticule every-so-slightly. It's about 6"x1 1/4" roughly.

I want a box it to close securely and want it to be padded inside so it won't rattle around at all. I want this so I can travel with my razor, strop, and my thuringian for touch-ups so I'll be ready for anything. :D

So anybody have any experience or ideas making a box for a stone? Type of wood I should use? If this goes well, I'm going to fashion another for my 8"x2" coticule.

My best advice would be to speak to oldblades (Tim). He is awesome with wood and I'm sure would be more then happy to answer all your questions.

I don't have boxes for my free-standing hones... but I do keep them on cedar planks.

The wood is soft enough to protect my babies, and kinda wicks water away from them on the contact surfaces.

Also, after "storing" them on the planks for a few months, they give off a lovely cedar smell when honing. It really is sublime.:p


Long story short? I say go for a nice American cedar!

Howard at the perfect edge has wooden boxes, some are labeled from ardennes coticule, and some have leather strops on top, they come in various sizes

An easy way if you dont want to mortise solid wood is to laminate.

you have a top and bottom. center filler is 1/2 the thickness of your hone. Trace your hone and cut out the relief. make two and glue one to the T and one to the B

that's best for thin, irregular hones, but it may be simpler to picture frame around a rectangular thick one. which in that case i would possibly make more of a sleeve with a sliding lid on the end, than a face-lidded box.

sleeve is made for a removable stone so the fit is looser. One the face-lid you can make the bottom hold fast +1 for soft wood here. And the top made to fit snug but easily removed. Some way to keep it together: tie, rubber band, hinge and hasp etc.
