Do you have a magnetic base to hold your razors for sanding?

I constructed a metal jig/base sort of like Bill Ellis' design, using rare earth magnets. Anyway, it holds the blade great and makes sanding soo much easier, but what I'm finding is that I'm magnetizing my razors. You wouldn't think it's that big of a deal until you try honing on one of the DMT plates!! The razor sticks to it. Some more than others. Some are like 10x the normal suction you would get on a fine hone. You might think it's great, it will keep the blade flat for you, but it's almost a PITA to push the blade across if they are too magnetized. I have still been able to get the razors that have been magnetized nice and sharp, but I just thought I would mention it.

Anyone else have a setup like this and notice the same thing?

Not with razors, but we had some magnetic tool racks in the shop about 25 yrs ago. Had to be careful what we stored on them, it was a disadvantage to have some tools magnetized. Apart from anything else they collected swarf & small parts. I don't think I'd want a magnetized razor.

If magnetizing is a problem, it might work to knock the blade a couple of times. doesn't it?

Take a look at this page here and just get one of these demagnetizers that is large enough to take a blade.

I thought about hitting the blade on something hard, but I was under the impression that to demagnetize metal you need to impact it pretty hard. I didn't want to be knocking my razors around too hard.

Thanks for the link Jimmy. I had no idea demagnetizers existed. Looks like Woodcraft carries a magnetizer/demagnetizer for $6. I'll have to pick one up this weekend and give it a go.

I do have similar experience to your. Either here or on B&B is post about how to botch demagnetiser that your razors will fit.
