I do, or have, used the following:
I get most of them loacally, but they are not hard to find online.
- Polyurethane (gloss, semi gloss and matt. Oil Based)
- Boiled Linseed Oil
- Tung Oil (not pure, it had driers and stuff in it)
- Danish Oil (The oil-varnish kind)
Shellac- Wood Turner's burn-in finish
- CA (A.K.A. Superglue)
- Clear Epoxy
- Wax
- Lacquer
Notes:
-Shellac is not that good as a top coat, but works very well as a wash coat between finishing proucts and as a sanding sealer.
-No reason you can't use water based Polyurethane, just seal the wood with a wash coat first. I don't use it because I'm a purist :p
-Wax alone is only a viable finish on very dense and oily woods.
Yep what Dan d Man said :D
I am not all that fond of CA myself, but like everything having to do with razors there are some personal choices here.... Just make sure you are a little aware of types of wood vs types of finish issues...
I've only used CA so far, but think the next set of scales may be water based polyurethane (gloss).
I think I'd like to try some oil finishes, but have a hard time buying a relatively large can of finishing product for a relatively small piece.
