Thread: Light Cleaning

While traveling, I have found it is almost impossible to prevent some water spots on my carbon steel razors.

What methods do you folks use to lightly clean off these spots and polish the blade?

I once read in the German forum.nassrasur.com that you can use Ballistol (weapon oil) for removing these kinds of spots.

How did it come you couldn't avoid the spots?

After shaving I always wipe the blade firmly with a towel avoiding touching the edge. To dry the edge I place a part of the towel in my palm and move the blade over it like on a strop.

This way the razor is always dry and polished after the shave.

I think the issue is just moisture and cramped space in general while traveling -- the blades do not have as much opportunity to breath and evaporate. I have hence started the habit of using a light coat of mineral oil on my blades after use, and that seems to be working well.

Of course, I have also considered getting a stainless as a dedicated travel razor... or perhaps even a Feather setup.

I always use several razors for travel, because stropping isn't easy when you are not at home. If the razors refuse working I use a DE (isn't that sad!).

But I always try to use a real straight razor as first choice during travel. I would not think of a feather razor.

But this is really an individual thing.

That's too bad, because it's an ideal solution for travel and there's no compromise in the shave. I certainly would prefer it to a DE.

You might try a buffing pad that the ladies use on their nails. Don't get the sanding one by mistake. These generally will remove light stains and not scratch up a razor. Lynn
