Hi Bill,
whenI first tried straightening the scales, as soon as I pulled them out of the water there was no way to make them cool straight. Thats all the ruler was for, to give a flat, straight, surface for the scales to cool straight.
I'm sure there are better ways, thats just the jury rig I chose.

Well, I gave it a shot. What I didn't forsee was the possibility of the boiling water causing the scales to fog and become discolored. They immediately started to turn milky and no amount of polishing would clear them up. The water wasn't that sucessful. Live and learn. I am planning on hand making a set of scales w/ some wood from my stash of hardwoods--the trick will be making them thin enough w/o a surface planer.
