Newb trying to rescale

Hey,
I have a few questions about rescaling. I have the opportunity to buy an Engels with broken scales and a razor that was rescaled with fixed engels scales quite cheap. I was wondering how easy it would be to pop the scales off and put them on the Engels razor, and then buy some new ones to put on the other one. What would this involve?
Also, I know discussing this here is taboo, so if anyone could please PM a "quote" on what it would normally cost to switch one pair of scales? What it would cost to pin the second pair of scales? What just a set of scales costs? What pinning material costs?

off the top of my head....

Pinning materials
A few bucks for brass rod from a hobby shop.
Order some washers from microfasteners.com.
Buy a peening hammer from a hardware store.
an anvil or hammer to set use

The one thing I would add, in addition to the very good direction of reading the unpinning and repinning how-to in the wiki, is that it is WAY easier than it looks.

Just be sure you use a ball peen hammer and not a flat hammer. About 3 good taps is enough that the washers won't fall off, and after that, it's just a matter of making it tight and attractive.


If you're really unsure about it like I was at first, you can get a set of dovo replacement pins from classicshaving.com

They're nothing special, but they have a finished end on one side, so you only have one side to peen. And of course, they come with all the appropriate washers.

That being said, if I was to do it over again, I don't think I'd bother. Pinning really is MUCH easier than it looks.

Bring it along and the 18th and JoeD and the group can take a look at it and provide some advist/directions on doing this.

The hardest thing about pinning is to convince you guys to practice it a few time first..

Just take two Popsicles out of the freezer share them with the wife or kids and then pin them together... If you don't crack the Popsicle sticks you probably wont crack razor scales... heck I guess you can use other pieces of wood but it won't taste good first :)

Actually, I only put it that way because it seems that most people don't understand the difference between the two words.

I used to know how to write. Now I find it more convenient to use run-on sentences. They especially are appreciated in scientific writing.
