I am a newbe here, even though I have been a "viewer" for some time. I have a few Wade and Butchers razors that I am trying to restore. The handles on all of them were broken. I am looking into buying handles from classicshaving. How do I tell the size of my blades and if the handles will fit. The blades seem quit large. I can read a faint etching on the one of the blades: The Celebrated ??
Measure from the spine to the cutting edge. Measurements are typically in 1/8" increments. 5/8 (or 10/16) is very common. Some W&B's were large, being 7/8 and even 8/8.
I think the max the handles that Ray sells at ClassicShaving will handle is a 6/8, but you may want to call him to make sure. The other concern I have is the width of the tang and length of the old, big W&B's. Lynn
Maybe check with Bill Ellis to see if his GORGEOUS ironwood scales will accomodate your blade.

The problem you will face with most Wade & Butcher blades is not the blade size (6/8, 7/8, OMG, etc.). It is that W&B's are generally longer from the pivot hole on the tang to the point. They won't fit in most modern, factory replacement scales. Your options are custom scales, and well, custom scales. SAVE the old scales as a pattern for the replacements!
The other obvious idea is to find another like razor on eBay and transfer the scales. I only do this for certain razors where the scales are identified closely with the blade and maker, for instance a Wonderedge.

Guest, why don't you try and make the scales from scratch, it is a fun project, and if you screw up, you can always get them online. For starters, try to make them from plastic, laminate, plexiglass, or something that is similar thickness like the old ones. Later you can try with wood.
