What should I do with this razor?

I bought this from ebay as a spur of the moment thing. When it got here I found that it had some serious pitting which you can see in the red circle. Some of this pitting extends to the edge. For a while I was wondering if I should hone it and see if the pitting is anything other than cosmetic, or use the scales on another project. While I was trying to figure this out I found a small crack in the edge, highlighted by the small red circle.
What does everyone think I should do with this razor? Should I cut the toe off to get rid of the crack and pitting, making it a stubby little razor? I don't think I could bread knife the edge to get rid of the crack because this razor is already quite narrow.
Another option would be to give it away to someone who wants it (I just can't bring myself to throw it out, but I could give it away).
What ever I do decide to do, it won't all go to waste. I will be using the scales on Bengall that had to have just over a quarter of and inch chopped off the toe because of a crack. (That was hard work with just a diamond file)
I'd love to hear what you have to say about this.

what i see is a big cicle and cracks goes until that level then sorry just get rid of it.

Another unlucky one Nathan. I can't see how far it extends from the photo, but you may be able to hone it out. How far does it go mate?

if you cut down the toe and make it a stubby razor it would work well as a PCR razor. I did the same to a blade last year but it was wider than yours.
If you havent seen the PCR thread its all about small razors :)

Grind off the bad part which will leave a stub razor. Then attach scales and hone it. Then leave it in the kitchen knife drawer.
My mother loves the razors I give her. They are great for trimming/cutting meat.

Not that unlucky because I hardly paid anything for it. The crack goes just past the end of the bevel and then seems to curve back on itself. I don't think I could hone it out because it is already fairly narrow. It is just over 4/8ths. I can't bring myself to throw it out so I'm thinking of chopping the toe off.

Do you have a link to the PCR thread. The search won't let me look for PCR because it is too short.

I have started chopping the toe off with a diamond file. This is going to take a while. If I go at it a little bit every day I think I should be able to get through it in about two weeks. It looks like it won't be too short.
It will be a stubby razor, so I will be able to scare my in-laws by telling them its a razor for young teenage boys.

Just an update on how it's going. I have just finished chopping off the toe. Now I am going to think about reshaping the end into a barbers notch like it used to have. But that might have to wait until my fingers heal. Its hard work doing this with just a diamond file and no vice.

No blisters, just a bit sore. But this did take me about three days to get through. It has made stropping a bit hard though. Now I'm trying to reshape what is now the toe. I have wrapped some material around the blade and clamped it in a D clamp. This gives me something to rest against the edge of my desk. I'll post some pictures tomorrow to show my progress so far.

Here is an update of where I'm up to. I have just finished redoing the barbers notch. Because I don't have a vice I wrapped the blade in a rag and then clamped it in a D clamp. This gave me something to rest against the edge of my desk. It didn't take any where near as long as I thought it would. Now I have to polish it up and I'm planning on cutting down the original scales to fit. Once its all polished up and put together it should look good.

I really like this post it is a nice balance to the I need a power tool post I often see (and often make myself).

Make your self a little bench hook for the filing work. I have several vices bout would have most likely used a bench hook to hold the blade when filing. I have several bench hooks in different sizes I find them very handy.

When I first started with razors I wanted to get a dremel with all the bits and pieces. But then when I went back to Australia for a holiday I borrowed my friend's dremel for a test drive. That was when I realised that I am the sort of person who should be kept away from power tools. The exact moment I made this discovery was when I had a grinding bit in my fingers, locked into the chuck, and then turned it on (only for the briefest second). When restorers give advice like make sure the razor is secured before you start using a dremel, they are really talking to me.

I just looked up bench hook on google. That is kinda the idea I had behind using the D clamp. It worked really well, but vice would be even better.

Here is the finished product. All I have to do is hone it up and give it a shave.

Just in case anyone is interested, this razor is now up for sale in the classifieds.

Very nice I think that you are the most patient person that I have heard of. I chopped the end of my razor off with a Dremel and it took a long time so that must have taken nearly forever. Nice work with the scales as well.
