I'd like to get a NOS stainless Henkels Friodur, but can't decide between the 7/8 and the 8/8. Obviously, the 8/8 is wider (duh) but I'm also reading it's longer, and therefore harder to scale?
The rescale material I have on hand is 6" long x 1/2" wide. Will that be sufficient to recale either of these?

My immediate reaction was to say 8/8! All the way! However, how much experience do you have with large, unwieldy blades? I have the 7/8. It's big. Nice & big. Perfect really. It still remains a sensible enough size to be my razor of choice.
The 8/8 is an impressive monster, but the 7/8 is a very manoueverable large razor. Hopefully some 8/8 owners can offer their opinions.
Scales on my 7/8 are a little under 6", so that would mean very little play. It doesn't mean you can't fit an 8/8 in that size, as i have a long wedge.
Here's a link, so you can get an idea. The scales are 5 3/4 inches & the spacer wedge is nearly 3/4" of that.
The 8/8 is a sheer joy to use. yes, it's big, but the heft and feel of it is superior to just about any of my non-wedge razors. I have a feeling if you'd be happy with one, you'd be happy with either. Do you like big razors? How about BIGGER razors?
My scale blanks are usually 6 x 1.
I don't know if you could get a set for the 7/8 out of a piece of 6 x 1/2?
it depends on you. for me 7/8 is too large.

0.5" thick is waaaay thick.
I use 1/8" thick for my scales.
0.5" is just the thickness of the block of wood... they're not scales yet. :D
8/8 without a second thought. But that's just a personal thing. Ever since I fell in love with my 8/8 Filarmonica 14 Especial Para Barba Duras I barely shave with my smaller ones anymore. I've acquired 3 other 8/8 razors since then. And I was a 5/8 - 6/8 lover for more than 25 years. But I like change so I'll still pick one of the smaller ones.
But to get back to your question.
I'm actually just in the midst of rescaling a 8/8 Friodur for one of our members and the scale length finished is 6 3/8 inch from the far end of the scale to the start.
The problem with the 8/8 is the distance from the pivot to the edge. The edge not sticking out the bottom of the scales is going to be your biggest concern when designing those scales. Basically you would need a hair larger than 1" wide for the slab.
The perfect slab size would be 6 3/8 x 1 1/4 x 1/8 fo just 1 scale.
I do love the big ones.

OK, have you done a 7/8? Would it work with 6" scales instead of the 6.25" scales required for the 8/8?
Yes, 6" long is enough for the Friodur 7/8 scalloped spine I have done and 1" wide is good to.
Well we've already discussed this a little, but I'll just add--I have a 7/8 Solingen and I have the 8/8 Friodur, and the 7/8 IS just a tad more maneuverable than the 8/8, but the Spanish point does make up for some of that, especially around your nose/upper lip.
It all comes down to what's calling you...

Decide on the razor you want first of all, and then get the correct sized wood to scale it. Not the other way around.
Razors are expensive, wood is cheap.
