What sorts of places do you scale makers find your wood at?
Take your chainsaw to the local forest:)
Try amazon hard woods or your local rockler or woodcarfter stores. I've had good success with scott over on ebay as well.
actually you can find some great woods on ebay believe it or not. If you are up for that try searching for scale blanks, knife scales etc. If you are looking for a certain type of wood, just look it up and you'll find almost anything.
I get my wood from Bell Forest Products at www.bellforestproducts.com

Out of a few vendors that I've done business with on ebay, this gentleman is by leaps and bounds the best.
eBay Store - exotic wood by scott: Turning Stock, Pen Blanks, Knife Scales
Either the wood pile out back ot one of the gum trees out front. Or you can beg some from your friends @SRP.
You can get some scale material from knife making supply stores, but a lot of the material is 5 inches and too short for razors, unless you want to make end pieces. You'll need scale material 6 inches in length. Here's a source for precut:
Lumber Sold in Pre-Cut Lengths - Rockler
If you have the means to cut your own slabs then here's one for you:
Heimerdinger Cutlery
Good luck with your project. :)
I use my back yard and keep an eye out for trees cut down in my town. I also check craigslist for people selling firewood. I call them and ask if they'd sell me a single log of decent wood (maple, oak, walnut, cherry) for cheap. The downside is that I then have to wait a year to actually cut the wood.

These guys go above and beyond on customer service, shipping is good too...
The 1x1x12 hobby wood and the 1.5 x 1.5 x 6 blocks are what I use
woodcraft and rockler for pre cut 1/8' thick.
Bellforest for larger pieces that I can throw at my bandsaw.
Thanks everybody for the great suggestions!
look through craigslist as well. My friend found someone selling 3 grand worth of wood and woodmaking stuff and bought it for 1 grand. I just get the wood from him.
I have a millwork shop nearby that also sells hardwood. They stock domestic and exotic hardwoods and in the process of doing their millwork they keep all the little pieces and sell them off, mostly to people turning pens. Their prices are very reasonable.
If you can find a business nearby that mills hardwood or sells hardwood I'll bet you will find that they will sell a lot cheaper than the ebayers. Shipping fees can be considerable and can be avoided if you can find local supply. Snoop around, I have never found a hardwood supply that did not sell our "little stuff".
