What size ball peen is good for razor pins? 2 oz, 4 oz. Larger?
2 oz should be enough. The pin material should be soft. You can make up for less mass in the hammer head with more blows. You only want to deform the standing pin so that it mushrooms wider, but not such deformation that the scale material is compressed/stressed too much.
I use a 4 oz. ball peen. 8 oz. or over would be overkill.
+1 on the 4 oz
ps: moved to the Workshop...
4oz
I have and use both 2oz or 4oz
Max, do have a preference between the two or just about the same?
2.6 oz. Blacksmith Hammer - Shinzan <!W-A-BH75> - The Japan Woodworker Catalog
I'm very happy with the 2.6oz I have. I polished the face and it works like a charm.
I made a two ounce from a 1/2 inch high strength bolt. I did not harden it but it works good on annealed brass or nickle silver pins. The 1/4" peen gives a good view of the pin. Handle is turned from a piece of teak I had on hand. I use the steel plate for a heat sink when polishing and for bucking the pins.
