Eye candy...Stabilized spalted maple...

Bill Wilcox did me a favor and sawed up a block of some stabilized spalted maple that I have. He did a very good job of resawing. These should make some interesting scales!
The 5/8 razor is for size comparison.

These are all rough cut and need a bunch of sanding. They will also need to have a backing applied, brass, ss etc to reinforce them some more. They are still not rock solid but much better than they were.

That is some beautiful wood. Can't wait to see the finished scales.

I hate wood... but spalted maple is beautiful.

I was very surprised that the spalted area didn't break apart since it was so soft and there was a crack that was moving the major spalted area. Before it was re-sawed I shot s small bottle of CA in the crack. I think that they will look good with some very thin copper which I have some 3X3 sheets of to use as backers for the wood. I also think that I will use the light part of the sheet as the pivot point of the scale.
