    Question Spike

Just showing off my newest ebay special and wondering your opinion on the scales? The are in great condition, no scratches or other blemishes to speak of, so would you keep them or replace them? If you'd replace them, what route would you take?

    That's clean Mike!

The scale look nice and simple. I wouldn't but if I must, what do you have available to replace it? Black Water Buffalo?

I've got a little of everything right now. I was thinking ... maybe, bakelite?

I think I would leave them. They're easily recognized as is, it's a Spike. Would you be asking the same question if it was a DD with the ducks on the side? Of course those scales aren't as pretty as the DD scales, so I can see why you might want to change them. Those scales are not only unique to the Spike blade but they are unique in the sense that they aren't your run of the mill vintage black plastic. OTOH it's your choice. Just my 2 cents.

I agree with Kent. Have a field day with being creative and making some cool scales but I share his opinion that SPIKE brand scales with a spike imprint are recognized. I know it's not a Porsche 911 from the glory days of the large rear spoiler, but it's kind of like removing the rear spoiler from such a vehicle; even if you replaced the spoiler with a custom made spoiler would it look as cool?

I say keep 'em and try to repaint the text.

Smythe did a wonderful makeover of a Spike and took some nice pics:

I have a nice spike also with the logo on the scales and have been mulling the same thing. If I was going to replace the scales I was thinking of something metallic to go with the name "Spike".
Maybe some "molten lava" like Glen has.

Let me know how you fair out. I am kicking the idea of replacing the scales and just having my buddy and his CNC machine copy the emblem onto the new set. :-)
