Ball Peen Hammer
I just picked myself up a new 4 oz ball peen hammer for pinning. I've been using an 8 oz up until now but i think i will get a smother result with the 4. I heard someone say that you should keep the ball polished. Ive given it a good rub with some 400 grit w/d and its pretty shiny and smooth. Do any of you guys think it needs anything more than that to achieve good results?
Thanks

I took an old furniture tack hammer and rounded the end of the flat side and then took it to the buffing wheel. Made it shine so you can see your face.
The thing with the ball peen is that that the piening side looks like will transfer over to your rivets. So if it has a big scratch on it, so will your rivet.

The more polishing you do on the hammer now, the less your pins will need later. I think it is very worth it to take the hammer to at least 2000 grit sandpaper... then a little jeweler's rouge and your pins will shimmer like stars.

VERY nice. Your pins will be immaculate! :beer2:

That's the ticket. But there is a big flesh colored smudge darn near the center of it. :rofl2:

Someone here (forgot who I think Harner could be very wrong) swears by pinning with a spoon rather than a hammer.
