alternates to bone?
Hey all,
I wanted to make some scales with scrimshaw. I thought about making them out of cow bone, but read a few posts showing the need to "care for them" (ie: every once in a while dipping in mineral oil, watching where you lay it down, etc).
Is there a low tech alternative of bone (ie: micarta, acrylic) that would look like bone and be able to take a black dye for scrimshawing without the "care" involved in bone??
Thanks for your help. Great site!

I have had bones scale in my possession for 10 yrs or more without any additional care and no adverse effects

white or cream color Corian, faux ivory, ivory micarta are a few that come to mind.

There are plenty of alternatives to bone, but its not necessary to avoid bone, its not a problem, the care and maintenance is minimal.

It is just like the others have mentioned there is not really any maintenance to speak of when it comes to bone scales.
If you are looking for something else to mess with, A wood carver friend came by the other day talking about carving PVC pipe. I have not done it personally but the way he was talking about it, there must be a bit of people out there playing with it
