First aid in the shop !!!

As some of you heard in chat last night I ended up in the ER getting stitches... Yes I am fine, just put a nice slice through the top of my thumb, down to the bone... BTW for what it's worth that damn razor was "TOO SHARP" :)
One half a second of inattention and bam it got me..

But anyway what I started the thread about was the fact I was almost not going to go in for the stitches because I had controlled the blood loss so good.... BTW if you have to go through all this "YOU NEED STITCHES"

In my hunting stuff I keep a fully stocked First Aid Kit when I am not hunting this stays in the house... I always have what are normally called Trauma Powders, or Blood Clotters, Homeostasis Powders etc: etc:

QuikClot is one of the brand names, these are available now to the common man, expensive but available...
They save blood and yer Butt if your Wife is like mine when it comes to dripping blood all over the house :)

Anyway they work fast, some burn like the dickens, but they will seal off wounds and give you time to apply a pressure bandage and get the bleeding under control so you can drive yourself the the ER like I had to LOL...
Not a bad idea to have some of at least the smaller packs, laying around...

I keep quicclot in my Bug out Bag first aid kit. Which goes everywhere with me. Drives the wife nuts.

Here is a supplier of hemostatic agents

Some do leave burns others do not. You have to decide what you want and how you are trying to survive.

Glen, there are better ways to breadknife an edge. :rolleyes:

Seriously though, glad you're relatively OK and you didn't loose a thumb.

While I have always found these interesting, I wonder if they could make the situation worse in some cases.

When I was a kid, I cut my left thumb down to the tendon, and around halfway to 3/4 of the way through the tendon. The ER docs would either just have stiched me up without stitching the tendon, or they would have had to open up that temporary scab...:hmmm:

It took about one minute for the ER nurse with some 9% Sodium Chloride solution (I looked) and a gauze pad to clean away the QuickClot....

Oh BTW we talked about using CA, her statement was this...

"Make sure it is a new tube if you use it, make SURE to clean the wound very, very, well before you use it first, or you seal in dirt (BAD) and if you even think you are going to need stitches DON"T use CA"

Whew, I'm glad everything worked out and you're OK, Glen. You need that thumb!

I try to make a point to use my kevlar gloves; completely cut proof. They're pretty thin and easy to hold things with. The only drawback is that you can't feel the heat of the blade when buffing or grinding. I feel much better with them on. Randy and I got a bunch of kevlar sleeves from an auction recently. They go from the wrist all the way up to upper arm. I haven't used any of those yet.

Glen,

Glad to hear that you are ok! It sounds like a good idea to have some of that blood clotter powder on hand in the workshop.

It's a big temptation for me to become desensitized to the fact that I am working with extremely sharp pieces of metal when doing any restoration work. I'm very fortunate not to have sliced up a finger or two when sanding or polishing a blade. :chop:

Yeowzer!!!! I hope it all turned out well Glen. What were you doing when this took place? I have had numerous cuts from working on razors however none that required stitches. Is this going to hamper you being able to do any hand work?

Then in that case I should get some of this stuff. Thanks for the tip.

So what was the prognosis on the cut? Is it going to heal quickly?

Thanks for the well wishes gents...

They say I can actually go back to honing tomorrow, if I keep it dry, using like Nitrile Gloves... Lucking I just cut meat, no tendons, the blade actually hit the bone on the top of my thumb...

When I am in the shop on the buffer etc: I use the Kevlar gloves too, great things, but I was just honing when this one got me...
Doing something I have done over 3000 times :) just putting a piece of tape on the spine and smoothing it out...

Well I'll be damned. First I hear about your accident. I couldn't make it to the chat last night as I suddenly didn't feel well. I think I inhaled to much crap. Goes to show one needs to wear his dust mask at all times.

Glad you're ok G-Bro. That sucks as it will take a while to completely heal and you'll feel numb on that finger. I presume it's your dominant thumb? the one you use for the wet thumb pad test?

At least it's not your index finger so you are still able to pull a trigger :)

Too bad about the accident but great to hear you're alright.

It's a good reality check to know that one of "THE" restorers had an edge accident. I guess I'll have to pay more attention in my future restorations. I hope your healing is a quick one.

I figured it was one of those things where it happened when you weren't expecting that it could. I buy nitrile gloves in the boxes of 100 and I can't wear them for more than 15 minutes before my hands start to sweat inside the gloves. I don't know if yours do, but I'd be careful if you're supposed to keep the wound dry.

I hear ya though, when honing, I wrap a cotton bar towel around the spine of the razor pinching the faces of the razor with my thumb and forefingers then I squeegee the edge carefully but firmly. It has potential for slicing right into the tips of my forefingers and I know I shouldn't do it that way, but it's a bad but effective habit I've developed.

Been there and glad you're OK. I build rifles, and a gouge that was sharp enough to cut and leave a shiny surface got my index finger. Six stitches. The ER doc asked what caused a smile-shaped cut. :rofl2:

I was in chat last night as you stated you were hitting the ER, and was a bit concerned!

Glad it wasn't TOO severe and you got it taken care of! You did it taping the spine?! Man...I know I'll be a lot more cautious from now on.

Thinking of this, I should get some of that powder and maybe investing in a fishing glove to help reduce being cut.

I usually use gloves that are made to wear when working with glass and ..blades! Going to buy a extra pair just to test it..but not with my fingers in it :)! ..Going to post soon my first works :)..i've started when i let my Red Point..a very nice one..fall down broking the tip of the blade..!

Let this be a lesson for all of us..... tape the spine and then hone the razor!

Glad you are ok. I will purchase some of this stuff I hate to say this, but quick Clot, or Hemabate or Methergine work great, but a good cigarette lighter and a huge pain tolerance works also.
This is a good lesson for everyone in the shop. Lets all keep safe, because nobody's wife wants blood on their floors.

WARNING!!! WARNING!!! WARNING!!!

The use of homeostasis powder can be a very bad thing. Please read this and understand this. First off I want to give you all some background. I am a trained Self Aid and Buddy Care instructor for the Air Force. I have had over 8 plus hours of training to including the use of quick clot on a pig. I have also instructured over 40 plus classes during with blood control. We go over all the correct procudures on when to use this and how to use it. Quick Clot is the honest last resort for heavy arterial bleeding on appendages. The reason why is that with quick clot it will actually sear the wound to stop the blooding. That is what hte burning feeling is. The wounds that have had this done on the battle field have to be properly cleaned out and then cut out to be fixed. There are also other problems that can happen with this stuff. Any moisture will start this chemical reaction, this includes the eyes, ears, noise, mouth, lungs and so on. This can also cause all kinds of problems. So please truely think about what you use this for. If you do use it please make sure that you follow all directions. Also if you use the dust version make sure that you use it down wind. Also do not, I repeat do not use this on a open wound the head, neck or abdomen.

Hopefully this will help anyone that does decide to use this , as this could be a big mess if not used right. Thanks guy

Glad to hear you can still use that thumb. I have a cut from a blade that scarred over on my index finger to remind me to be careful...Hadn't realized this happened, I would have sent those blades to you another time...but sounds like your recovered.

Here I was cursing the other day 'cause I chipped a fresh honed razor by wacking it accidentally on a hone. Now I'm grateful it wasn't my thumb that got hit.

Ditto on keeping Kwikclot in the "bug-out-bag"...it's good to hear that others keep one on hand.
