I recommend a pint of CA, some annealed silver rods, and a dremel with a 7/8 gripley attachment.
I think this is a problem worse than rust or celluloid rot. This problem will eat into your budget for all things hobby related. There is no cure, you can only wait it out. Normally this affliction will last between 18 to 32 years.
Spackle and sand liberally its the only way!!!
It is self healing with the age
Enjoy it WITH the crack and put up with whatever comes out of it.Get down on the floor and play trucks or dolls or whatever,because soon they are too big to hold anymore and will squirm when you hug them(but do it anyway).
There's not much you can do about a crack that extends all the way to the spine like that. You could try duct tape I suppose to help keep moisture out but eventually you'll just have to confront the issue head on
