Broken Western SR repair w/ Eastern input...

I watched the new video posted shaving with a Japanese razor (great video by the way). My problem: I have this broken Antoni Tadross SR (could be a junk razor for all I know) & am a noob, but love new projects:

I cut the blade down under water with battery powered dremel. I took my time to ensure minimal heat, took probably 30 minutes. My battery powered dremel turns much slower than either of my two electrics...shockingly, I'm not a fan of the 60 cycle jingle

Gorilla glued, sanded & stained. Might I say ugly as sin, bulky, useless...gotta do something about that.

That's more like it. Not sure how I want to finish it from here. For now I'll leave it stained. The stain is Minwax Provincial, straight.

Starting to polish the edge from here out. All of the stones are Japanese wetstones, some natural, some synthetic & of various mfg.

I'd love to hear from you guys to hear some input. I have to say that it shaves well. I found myself using shorter strokes with it, just like the video. I did nick myself at my cheekbone, can't use a shorter blade like a typical 3" blade. Works real well around the ears & throat area where. Was an Antoni Tadross SR even worth TWO DAYS? I enjoyed it no matter, but don't plan on any more.

That looks really great. I think you did a very nice job and it was a very creative way to have a razor live on.

The only question I would have is the use of gorilla glue. Since it needs UV or air exposure (I can't remember which) the bond between the handle might come apart? I would suggest using an epoxy (chemical reaction, no exposure needed) if you were to do it again.

I've used Gorilla glue with a lot of projects, stuff sticks & stays stuck. It's good for outdoor projects as well. I thought about an epoxy, but the Gorilla glue is what I had on hand...besides standard wood glue.

The wood is white oak (again, what I had on hand). What would you guys recommend for a finish? I don't want it to be slick is my issue. I thought about several coats of laquer, but a smooth finish + slick shave soap = loss of control in my feeble mind. It would "look" much better with a high build of laquer, but I have my doubts on function. The little sucker handles oh so well...

I use both hands and to be honest it works like a champ. When the handle looked like a cheap steak knife handle I held it like I would if I were using it in the mirror. I shave with both hands & my grip is pretty much the same. Then I marked the handle with a pencil. From there I took some sanding drums to it (other than the tail section, used a small saw made for cutting tight radiuses for that) and a lot of hand sanding. Works real well for ATG on the neck/chin area.

That is an interesting and handsome approach to 'recycling' a broken razor.

Might I suggest that the finish would be augmented by an end end plate or ferrule (either in brass, silver or nickel silver) where the wood meets the steel. Of course, such decoration is much easier to apply before or during the process whereby the wood is permanently fixed to the tang. *

Thanks & I agree on the ferrule. I also wish I had gone with a cherry stain on the wood (white oak). It's a done deal now, still thinking about the finish. I'm leaning on building up a thick laquer coat on the scale.

Give it a whirl...just tape the cutting edge for your own sake (guess why I'm saying this...). The pins that I used are just copper out of electrical wire & the scales/handle can be made out of pretty much any medium to hardwood. Besides, what do you have to loose if you are using a SR with broke scales or one that had been damaged like mine was.

Thank you...I'm surprised with the positive input. There are so many craftsmen here on this site. I only wish I had some of their talent.

Yes, I used the dremel to route out where the tang goes. Used one shaped like a cylinder for the outside & a round one for the middle. I'm too clumsy to try intricate work with a router, but I am sure it could be done. I put a pin in to help with the placement of the blade tang/tail, then added more before gluing to keep the pieces from slipping while clamping.

Thank you. I didn't want to cut off any more of the blade than I had to. If it didn't turn out, I could have always rescaled it...and still can. Besides, for some dang reason I always take the rough & hard road.

I would have left the tang on as well for the very same reason. No sense butchering up a razor if you don't need to or it doesn't serve an esthetic purpose.

If you are looking for something to seal/finish the wood and protect it from moisture I tried something a while back working with Cocobolo.....plain ol' mineral oil. Smear some on, rub it in, let it sit, apply some more if desired, rub some more; the more you rub the better it looks. I've used it on a couple of str8s and it seems to work pretty good. It soaks into the wood to help protect against moisture, brings out the wood grain. I've restored several razors and like the look of natural grain in wood so I use only natural stain if any then finish with clear or mineral oil depending on the wood. BTW.......Great Looking Razor!!

Mr. Harner, you are so right. I felt that it was missing something (other than a finish) & you hit it on the head. Rounding the front was just what it needed. Dang it.... Oh well, going to use it again tonight.

Two coats of gloss Helmsman on it. Still need to polish it, but it will work for now.

What a fantastic idea! You could make some money doing that for people unfortunate enough to have dropped their razors or for some reason have a broken blade.. Looks SO much better than the shortened blades in the normal length scales. If I ever break or seriously chip one of my razors I hope you wouldn't mind if I asked you to consider converting it to a ""Eurasian" razor.. :D

That's a beautiful handle you put on that! Love it!

One thought tho, maybe put some kinda silicone sealant around where the handle starts to keep any water and moisture out. Taking that apart again might be a PITA.

Mr. A, I'd consider it, but there was a lot of time put into it. WOuld be quicker on another though (I've roughed out one in deer antler).

Rob, that gorilla stuff shouldn't let anything in, but it wouldn't hurt to keep an eye on it.

The main thing that I did that I wouldn't do again is put a finish on it. I should have left the wood natural and just put some sort of oil to it.

A blast from the recent past. That is using that razor to the best possible use. Absolutely beautiful work and an ingenious idea. Hat off to you. WOW. Did you ever naage to make one in deer antler?

Thank you. I've got it roughed out, but not finished. I don't have a busted razor for it... It's setting in a cup in my shop/work area somewhere.
