Hi all
I have some razor blades which are beyond restoring due to very bad chipping etc...
I was wondering whether a skilled blacksmith can re-utilize the steel (which I assume to be of high quality) to forge another razor ?
I would prefer that over having to throw them out as scrap metal ...
I know nothing about smithing, but it sounds unlikely. If you had enough i guess it might be worth considering, though the cost may well be prohibitive. Basically i think they'd have to be completely melted down & new blanks forged.
It's amazing what some of the fella's manage to restore though. Why don't you post a few photo's to show us the extent?
I was indeed thinking along the lines of melting down & remaking a blank. Have no idea of the cost or other issues however.
The amount of steel in a straight razor is too small to be considered as worthy of remelthing and forging all by itself.
A good use for old straight razors is that they are often ground down even further to make the blades for specialist hobby knives. This would be such knives where a keen edge is to prized, such as in wood carving, marquetry or fine paper cutting.
