Took my son to hockey this morning, and as we returned home and I walked in my door, surprisingly I was not greeted by my happy dog -- He immediately ran into his crate. I knew something was up because he already knew he was in trouble, so, after a few minutes, I found this little pile of scraps scattered around my living room floor...
My dog ate $18 worth of horn ;)
luckily they were just rough cuts off the bandsaw..

Lucky it wasn't something irreplaceable like original scales you were restoring.
That's sad. Luckily there wasn't a sharp razor attached to those scales!
This reminds me of the time I had to leave my golden retriever inside the house while I went to work because he had just had surgery and it was raining outside. I returned home to a similar greeting as you and then found he had eaten my couch! The frame was still there but the fabric and stuffing was scattered all over the living room.
Let the dog try the same thing with the greaseless! :)
You know you can't really be mad at the dog, I mean it's bone right :)
Be sure to keep the polising compound out of his reach. Dogs love the grease based stuff, and it does not work very well after it goes through the dog.
Back when I collected straights but didn't shave with them I bought this W&B frameback on ebay. I opened the box and took it out of the bubble wrap and saw that the end was badly damaged. I was really angry as I wanted the razor and the scales had looked so good in the description. I emailed the seller and described it as being 'chewed up'. He emailed back and told me he was giving me a full refund.
When I used the term chewed up he said he remembered that his puppy had gotten into the items he was packing. He didn't realize the razor was damaged because it had already been bubble wrapped. He told me to dispose of it as I saw fit. I threw it in a drawer for a long time. Finally got it out and honed it and it turned out to be a good shaver. :)

Funny you mention this as my dog always comes running to me when I start hand sanding horn scales. But when I do offer the dog a whiff of the scales she's not interested at all of running away and chewing them up. Must be the smell in the air or something. Maybe it's the same for dogs as catnip is for cats. :shrug:Quote:

That reminds me of a mate who's dog used to eat his socks!
He'd do a load of washing and then come downstairs in the morning to find that he had no socks and one very fat dog.
Apparently he used to get them all back 24 hours later...! But they did need washing again by that point..! Hehe!
I thought about this thread last night as I was honing up a W&B I had just rescaled in some pink ivory. My bird, Django a meyer's parrot, kept running down my arm trying to chew on the new scales. Apparently as intelligent as he is "that is sharp" still does not translate.

See, I knew my dog loved the horn, its my own fault for leaving them out (albeit in a crazy difficult place to grab) on the counter in the kitchen...
Its funny..whenever I am working horn my dog is RIGHT there... He stands there, sneaking licks of the sandpaper...or the dusty scales... LOL...
I probably started the wholel thing by giving him a piece of scrap a few months ago. I was just asking for it!
