Making Scales for Your Straight Razor

I started to put some info on making scales in the blog section. It can wind up taking me a lot of time to complete, so I don't want to babble on if there is no interest.

Give me your imput. I'll need more than 3 or 4 of you to be interested in it for me to continue. Let me know on this thread. One or two can leave a comment on the blog also, just so I can get a handle on how blogs work. Something else I have to learn :rant:

This making scales info will be on the update to my CD, along with some other stuff, of course. For now, I am only posting this mini class on SRP.com, and maybe my own blog somewhere out there in blog land, where ever that is.

I'd be more than happy to learn about making new scales. As it stands, I have a couple of eBay specials I'm working on that would probably clean up really nice with a new set of scales.

I vote continue if you have the time! :D

I have a 7/8 wedge I got on ebay that is in need of scales. So let the babeling begin.:D

Blab away Bill. This is something i have been thinking about and would love to learn.

Please do carry on, I'm very interested in this particular topic. It may be only me, but I find that the majority of razors that I have seen, have lackluster scales and are screaming for a rescale.

Please continue. I'd really like to learn how to make scales. I have all sorts of pieces of exotic woods and other material just waiting. I even have a couple of pieces of Mamoth ivory I bought on Ebay. they're not big enough for whole scales. thought I'd fill in the edges with something else exotic, like maybe black onyx (can stone be used for scales? if I sculpt it to the proper shape). I'd be a happy camper if you'd continue.

Actually, fossils are not stone ~ yet. They are on there way there. Petrified is what you are thinking of. That's where all the organic material has been replaced by the aging process and turned it into stone. You need a whole new batch of tools to work with stone, and I won't be going into that.

i too will be looking forward to urleebird's tutorial. Making your own scale looks like a good little project to do. (i've been fancying that the tight-grained jackfruit wood that i have will look good as scales.)

i just can't figure for now how i can replace the pins- buy replacements? or if the old pins might be reused :shrug:

Simple stock removal method from plexiglass sheet, and lot's of elbow greese... The pins and washers are hand hammered into shape from silver and copper wire. Gives new meaning to a word 'custom', huh...

But I sure want to know posibilities for making composite scales, like gluing the materials with epoxy, pinning them completely (as on some of your knifes, Bill) e.t.c.

I have a couple of pyritized(sp) ammonites and braciopods witch I'm sure are petrified, but since I've always heard these types of artifact refered to as fossils, it never dawned on me that there was a difference. Guess it's time to buy a couple of new books for my library. I still want to learn how to make scales though.

I'm most interested in following your blog; I'd certainly like to know how it's done. I'm delighted with those beautiful wooden scales you pinned on that old concave razor of mine. I don't have the equipment, nor the set-up here overseas, to make any of my own at present. I'm sure to be ordering some more of those nice look'n scales you're currently offering at your website.

I would love to learn how to make some scales, but I lack tools and skill. so I may just have to buy some anyways....But I hope I can make some.

Hi Bill, I'm definately interested. I have your CD, most of the tools and a few old blades. Do we need to have "all" of the tools by the time your class starts?
