I've seen a few nice scale projects and I'm interested in where the wood for the scales comes from. Is there a place online that carries wood in the right length or is it a common item in hobby stores and the like?

There are a lot of on line resources for hardwoods. Google would turn up most...
I get some of my material (usually non-wood's) from Koval Knife Supply

If your looking for some really exotic woods, Righteous Hardwoods is a great source. They even have complete burls on hand some times.. wood is seasonal and so is their inventory.

Do a google search for stabilized wood. Or, go to a woodworking store.
Also, Ebay is a good source. Do a search for burl wood, cocobolo, bloodwood and many others.
Checkout Lee Valley Project Woods. For my scales I used the 1/8" thick. If you lay it out carefully you can get 8 scales from one 3"x24" piece.
Thanks for all the input guys, now I just have to wait for Bill to post the instruction on how to make them in his blog! :D
If you dont find what your looking for in stablized wood, I know a simple tutorial for stablizing small pieces of wood for knife scales.. it would work exceptional for the thin razor scales.
OK, what are you waiting for?? :pQuote:

I know the author made a disclaimer/warning on the site, but I'm going to echo that warning again here:
Many wood products are disolved in a flamable solvant (Ketones), and while I disagree that using a real hotplate (i.e. a labratory hot plate) is dangerous, please use real caution when heating any solvant.
Many of you have those neat Rival instant hot water pots for your shaving, and that would be a perfect resource for your boiling water.
Even the heating elements of an electric stove can ignite the fumes from petrolium base solvants... so please be smart and be careful.
I'm looking into a few ideas from the bladesmith community that may be applicable to the casual home razor restoraton projects... I just wish I had the means currently to dive in my self
I've made a couple of scales from wood at www.woodcraft.com.
They carry a variety of exotics in 1/8 inch thickness.
