Crack in middle of great blade, any chance?

I just picked up an 8/8 Wade& Butcher barbers use razor from a local flea market, thing is it has a large crack in the middle of the blade about halfway up. I paid $15 for it, so I figure it was worth the gamble to see if it was repairable or not. It has new scales and aside from the crack the blade is perfect. I think it was just restored and then dropped. Is there any way cracks can be fixed, since cutting it out grinding it out is not an option. It is a very fine crack, and was wondering if any forging or anything would repair it, or allow for it to be repaired.

After comparing it to my 7/8 it's actually 9/8 or possibly 1 3/16

AFAIK there is no way of repairing a crack such as you are describing. If it is too long to be honed out the razor is a display piece.

You say halfway up. That's half the blade. Don't even think of giving that razor a spin for shaving. If it can't be honed out it needs to be reground and considering the length of the crack I would just forget about it.

Yeah I figured the chances were low. I'll just hold onto it in case someone ever comes up with something. It's such a shame, a huge blade like that going to waste. Thanks everyone

FWIW, years ago when I collected them and didn't use them I had a W&B 'for barber's only' in similar condition. I put it on ebay disclosing the crack and still sold it for a decent buck. Some guys want them as a wall hanger so if you don't want it for display you can probably get your money out of it and maybe more. :)

yeah i see them selling alright. Im not concerned about losing $15 though, its just that I dont want an otherwise perfect and somewhat rare blade go to waste. Any tips on how to cover up or hide a crack for display(without closing the razor)? And Im not asking with the intent of selling it without saying it has a crack.

Un-useable, but you could either sell it on the bay (full disclosure) or display it (all it's good for).

Silly question: why not hone it and use it? A very fine crack might not do any harm.

even sillyer make a split edge (open and round the crack:p

Depending on how exactly where the Crack is in the center...you could turn it into a PCR or a small touch up razor.

Cracks run right? Remember the last one in your windshield. OK, then think about that last shave and if that crack suddenly ran and/or just broke mid stroke. Why take that chance?

Surely this is one way to encourage a light, no pressure, shaving stroke???

if blade has crack i would definitely avoid using that blade. Just personal preferences.

If you can't feel it in the thumbnail test, then it should shave just fine.
I suspect this is one of the heavier type of razors, and in that casr the blade should not have any flex in it.

Meaning if you can get it to shave, it may look a bit ugly but functionally it should be just fine.

While the crack is fine enough that it doesn't ruin the look of the razor, I wouldn't try to use it. The razor is quite stiff and doesn't flex much but still does flex. I'm going to try something, and if it works it works. If it doesn't I'll still feel better knowing i gave it a shot. I'll post results in a couple months. Thanks everyone.
