Thinking of making a hanging strop for the Stratocaster.

Now that I ordered all that nice HandAmerican Leather for the PSA mandrels and have at least two extra 3"x24" strips that I won't use up, I was wondering what to do with it.

Then while looking over at my DOVO Russian Leather hanging off the bathroom door, I thought the handle on the DOVO resembled the body of the Stratocaster Scales pretty closely. Hey, how about a nice custom hanging strop for the Strat?

So I threw this graphic together. The strop width is 3". (Changed to 2 1/4" wide strop and narrower handle. Looks much better)

No gags about the extra short strop, it is just to show the shape of the bottom and top fixtures. Both would be made out of 1/8" or 3/32" brass rod and I would add a swivel at the top.

Knowing myself, I will probalby make it, if only for the experience of it.

I have no clue yet as to how to go about it :eek:, but that has never stopped me before.

Any ideas, suggestions or comments are welcome.

If you tried making custom strops with handles or without I would appreciate any pointer you can give me.

Vlad, I doubt that you would need any help on how too make one of these, but I can give you my two cents on what it could look like.
Since a strop is somewhat of an antique what better Strat than
Stevie Ray Vaughn's #1. That would give it the used vintage look and you could even put your initials on it too. Like your new logo as well.

Neat design! If you are going to roll the ends of the Hand American leather over the metal loop ends you must wet it first. The hard dry texture of the HA leather will crack if folded to sharply. Run a little water on where you want it to fold and it will immediastely soften up. Blot off the excess water and fold over and fasten.

Thanks for the advice Tony, I'll do that if I decide to do it all myself.

Last night after the post I considered it some more and realized that I should probably do the handle and the fixtures and ask you for a quote on putting leather and canvas on them. No rush on the quote. I have to make the handle and fixtures first.

Can you do similar style to the DOVO Russian Leather strop, it uses the same handle for both leather and canvas?

Glen, Are you refering to SRV's Hendrix Prototype?

I like the shape of that one. I only came upon that Strat after I made the Stat scales so this strop needs to match the scales otherwise it will look out of place.

I will make that one later. I really like its shape.

SRV has a #2 according to what I read when I was perusing the web for an image of a strat. It is a Hendrix #2 Prototype that SRV bought in, if I remember right, 1986. (Almost right, 1985. I found the article again: #1 Hendrix Prototype Story)

I thought well, all it is missing is the brush to make a complete shaving set.

Just a thought but this might work for a matching brush.

I will make more just want to figure out where the market may want me to go or where it may be. I can always do "thinking out of the box" designs, which I enjoy, on my own dime but it is much easier if there is a commercially successful product financing that artistic drive. It is nice to have one's work appreciated, but there is no better closure for a project than people willing to pay for the end result.

So my next set of scales will try to cater to a segment that will hopefuly be willing to buy them. I see it as not greed or a commerical cope-out, it is just a reality of the way things work.

When you get right down to it, it is not GE but money that brings good things to life :D.

If you disagree then you probalby don't want one of those Maestro's razors either :rolleyes:.
