Anybody draw/sketch razors before working on them?

Usually when I start working on a razor I'll sketch the blade a few times in a small sketch book I have, then I'll draw a few different types or shapes of scales. It gives me an idea of what will look right and a finished design to work toward.

I'm no artist and I can't draw to save my life so I just trace the blade closely and shade it and sketch the details then use pencil crayons for the scales and wedge.

Anyone else? I've seen drawings in some of the "in progress" pics posted so I'm guessing I'm not the only one.

Yeah, I do that too. I trace the blade with a pen, sketch scales with a pencil, and then do a lot of erasing. I'm just painfully aware that I do not have the artistic eye of some of our members. Fortunately, this forum has lots of examples of unique scales for me to attempt to copy!

Yep, I do it too. I trace the blade 5 or 6 times on a piece of paper and then try a few different designs and see which I like the most.

The only place I ever trace anything is straight on the scale material I'm going to use.

I use a photocopier a lot. That way I have the blade right, besides, my stickmen are a joke, so a razor would be terrible

I usually draw out a concept or model something to get my ideas right before going to work, but it always changes a bit on the bench. sometimes things need a little tweak to translate from drawing to a good looking razor

Old scales can be helpful here too - they can be used as templates for future scale making. Then, in addition to whatever designs you can come up with on your own and whatever you see on the internet to imitate, you also have the templates from old scales.

Another good reason never to throw anything away.
