Question on building razors...

I have been SR shaving for about 7 months now, and don't ever see myself using anything else (if I can help it) again!

Anyway, I was wondering if there was a place or site that I could go to, to learn about forging, shaping, sharpening and polishing blades. I have been interested in metal working (mainly blades and cutlery)for quite some time, but don't really know where to start. Is this something you would need an apprenticeship for? Just curious... you guys do some great work with the restorations and customs... envy.

Well you can start out reading this Sticky.

Then you might as well read every post in the Forge section of the Workshop section of the forum.

Then start making razors!

I don't know, other guys have done it, it must be pretty easy!

I learned a lot about knifemaking from the folks at Bladeforums. Another good source of info is Knifedogs.com. Razormaking and knifemaking are very similar. There's lots of info out there.

I recently made my first razor after a couple years of dabbling with making knives. It wasn't as hard as I would have expected to make a blade that gives a comfortable shave. I just finished up my second razor tonight, and it is without a doubt the smoothest shaver I've used. If the geometry looks right, and the steel/HT are good, it will shave nicely.

I have/had no "experience" on making a knife or razor, but I gave it a whirl and it turned out great. I read a lot here & only here, ground the steel (happened to be a pre-shaped blank of 1095), sent it to be heat treated, finished the grind & put it to work. I agree with Phillip, Bladeforums and Knifedogs are both good sources I also like British Blades forum. There is a lot of good information out there. With a little study it becomes easier to seperate the good information from the not so good.
