I just purchased a straight razor from ebay. The tang says dbl duck special no 1. It looks like the toe has been honed down and the blade has a smile edge.
What will it take to repair the edge and make it usable again?

Yes, it is fixable and can be an excellent shaver. It needs to be cleaned up to remove active rust and then it needs to be honed to eliminate the chip near the heel. After that it's just normal honing and smooth shaving!
The toe wear is common and was often done deliberately by barbers--same thing with the smile. Dubl Ducks were not made with smiling edges but it will shave just fine as long as the edge is not corroded or can be honed out. Are the scales okay?

As said, it can probably be saved. Cracks are the killer, & excessive pitting.
Thanks Utopian. This is my first straight razor. Not bad for an ebay find. It came in a Tuckmar box, so I thought that was what it was. I was pleasently surprised to find it was a dubl duck.
The scales are in great shape and there is no pitting, cracks or chips on the blade. Just some slight rust from being stored in a box.
Do you have somebody you would recommend to do some restoration work on it?

Have a look at the Member Services in the classifieds. Look for the restoration guys. A few quick searches should throw up examples of their work. I'd pick whoever has a style that suits you.
