G10 & Micarta - AKS™
+1 for AKS, Chuck and Jessica do everything they can to make sure you are satisfied. They have any size you need, from .006 to 1.5" thick. And if they do not have it they will try to get it for you. Only thing to watch out for is they do travel to the major knife shows so they close up shop for those days. However, that does not happen that often during the year.
yep AKS is great and tey have alittle bit of every thing for a maker and are jsut darn good ppl to work wiht
What's the best thickness for scales?
That's generally considered personal preference. Most people start out around 1/8" thick (.125"). Any thicker than that can look way too bulky. Personally I like scales even thinner than that. Check out scales on old razors- they weren't thick. You'll really have to figure out what thickness you like through trial and error.
PS- AKS is good, but isn't the only place. You can search for "knifemaker's supply" or something online and find a ton of places that supply G10.
Tracy over at Usaknifemaker has some nice stuff, Jantz supply, Masecraft, texas knife, um... Depending on what you are looking for Halpern Titanium has some off the wall stuff. Silver twill G10 sometimes, if you are into it they have the coarse texture digicam G10, though the color does not go all the way through, for those "combat" shaves.
Anodized Ti scales is something I need to look into. . Can't get much more high speed low drag than that, and making an anodizer is not that complicated. Off topic but still cool.
