Stupid Mistake! Can this be fixed??

Gents,

I hate myself for this, and I need some expert advice. I finally had some time this weekend to visit the folk's house and use some of my Dad's tools to buff out some old vintage blades. Everything was going well until I somehow managed to spill the water glass I was using to cool the blades off the buffer. As the equipment I was using is electrical, I urgently grabbed the nearest towel to start sopping up the water. Somehow, one of my favorite blades (the one that turned out the best as well), a BJ Eyre wedge took a tumble onto the floor and you can see the result below.

Can this be fixed? Maybe an elaborate barber's notch? Is it even worth it? I hate myself for doing this, as I am really partial to this razor and was looking forward to using it.

If anyone knows of someone who can fix this blade, please PM me with contact info and I'll solicit their services directly. As it'll be an irregular size, pre-fabbed scales won't work, so I'll likely need custom scales for it as well.

I think it will either have to either have a radical smile or be shortened. Glen would know better than I. Sorry about your blade. Maybe it will come out alright once it is fixed. :gl:

Best bet! Unless you are really set on a square point. Its an easy fix either way.

Depending on how it looks in hand, a cut back,(red) and then a slight Hollow (blue) like the older stub tails might work out.. This cut would keep 100% of the blade length you have and require the least amount of steel removal IME...
You could do this work yourself it isn't that hard if you take your time and have the tools.....

and keep the water behind you on somthing else other than the bench :D

I propose cutting the blade down into a round point...you'll notice that the length at the midpoint isn't altered and will fit scales better than just hacking the blade...

I'm sorry your blade got chipped. Hope it gets back in shape as it's a thing of beauty.

I would round it. It is relatively easy to do. I use a one inch strip sander for work like that. 80 grit belt to rough it in, then give it some light passes on progressively finer belts till you get to 600, a little hand sanding up through 2K and it will look like it was made that way. Just watch the heat and chamfer the edges with the last couple grits so they are not super sharp.

Almost forgot, there is a thick carpet remnant by my workbench for a reason.

Am I the only one who thinks that can be a new point? Why dont you smooth out the rough edges, maybe give it an artists touch and call it a "Cdogg point"

I think JMS is onto something here... Knock out another piece on the heel end so it matches.

Personally, I'd shorten it and keep the square point, if it was my razor :)

But, then again I like short razors, and I'm not too fond of round points :)

Wow, thanks to all for the many responses, ideas, and offers to help! I never expected to receive so many so quickly.

Now that I'm discusted with myself for doing this in the first place, I'm gun-shy about grinding the blade myself, for fear of completely ruining it.

I have made arrangements with a member here to have the blade re-ground, trying to creatively salvage the squarish-point of the blade. If anyone besides me is curious about the outcome, I will be happy to post an update when I get it back.

This Eyre is fixed, and heading back home...

Chad asked for the Black Horn on the broken Eyre then sent a Greaves along for new scales to be done in the reverse with almost pure Honey horn...

BTW nothing, not one micon of length, was lost on the re-contour of the point...
This is the point I was trying to draw with the computer :D I knew I could very slowly work the curve and bring it right to the broken point...

I was certain that I'd ruined that Eyre with my carelessness, and you took it and made into something really special. In all honesty, I think it looks even better now than before I chipped it!

I also love what you've done with the scales, they're perfectly shaped and truly unique. Definitely first class customs!

My origional vote would have been to round it but after seeing the results it was a very good choice.:tu

It looks like you stopped 'just' shy of going all the way back to the break, and gave it ever so slight of a rounded off point rather than an extreme spike. Am I correct?

It looks that way in the photos, and it was probably a great call on your part. It came out just beautiful.

That is exactly the way I did it, I just kept pushing the curve back until I married the new curve with the slightly neutered point... As is got closer and closer, I liked the look of that point, much better than a true spike... The other plus was not losing any length, the cutting edge is 2.5 inches almost to the 1000th

There were no problems with the rounding option, it would have been a bit harder to keep all the length, not a ton harder, but a bit... The only thing that didn't really appeal to me about it was, you just don't see many round point razors of that Era...

When life gives you a lemon, take out the grinder and make some lemonade.

It's hard to tell from the photos, but this blade is a near wedge and is quite heavy. Rounding the point, for me anyway, was never a real consideration. Not to be too anal about my razors, but an old Sheffield wedge with a rounded point would be too anachronistic for my tastes, which is also why I requested horn for the rescale - it's a material that was commonly used for scales back around the original date of manufacture. Well, that and it's just plain awesome.

Well, they arrived today and I just have to say that although Glen's photography skills are first-rate, the pictures do not do them justice! I'm really looking forward to my next couple of shaves, and to the many hundreds that will eventually follow.
