G10 thickness?

I'm about to order on some G10, never worked with it before and don't know the material. Wondering what thickness to get? Only worked in wood before, usually 1/8 thickness that I'd sand to a rounded profile, but thinking to get some .058 or thereabouts - if it is solid enough?

Hopefully Mad Max will see this he plays with G-10 a lot...

so far I have only ordered 1/8", and then sanded it down to .095" or so.. it is still incredibly strong at .095 and I would not be worried about strength even in the slightest. I highly doubt .06" would be a problem either.... where were you able to find that thickness for sale? I've been thinking about ordering some around 1/16" thin but I hadn't really gone hunting for a supplier yet. would save my belt sander some work, and I really like the way thin scales look aesthetically.

Alpha Knife Supply They have small pieces also (11" x 1.5") that only cost a couple bucks each. At least you don't have to buy a sheet to try something out.

Like sailingblues said - Alpha Knife Supply has a nice little selection in several colors, and thicknesses from .004 upwards as well.

They are great people to deal with. I personally find 1/16 to flimsy looking and don't like it. But that's just me and a personal opinion. I like anything from 0.080 to 0.100 in finished width. Unfortunately they only sell the single colored G10. All the other G10 stuff gets sanded down to width on the bet sander.

Thanks for your input Max. One question: down to .08 - is that a visual or a structural limit?

The reason I'm asking is I got a small swedish razor, a 4/8 Hellberg in white celluloid scales, that I measure at approximately .06, and I am guessing G10 is a lot stronger and more stable than celluloid. I thought some thin G10 could be useable for smaller blades, if still stable at that thickness.

The G10 is extremely stable and durable even at 0.060 or thinner. When I say flimsy I don't mean it to look like it's going to fall apart but just to thin for my personal taste. But 0.060 would work if that's what you like. It will outlive us all. Since you lose material when sanding you'd need to get something like 0.065 or 0.070 to finish at 0.060.
