Respirator and Greaseless Compound Recomendation

I am just starting to restore some razors. I was curious if someone can recommend a respirator. I was also curious if someone has found specific brands of greaseless compound are better than others.

Not a fan of the white cotton "disposable" types. Got a degree in OSH & EHS and they help...but don't even compare to a proper respirator.

Get one that's comfortable and has replaceable cartridges. I forget what the ones I get are called but you'll likely only find two types of cartridges. Ones for organic vapors and the other one...you want the *other one*. Truth be told the stuff flying around during sanding/grinding is big enough that either cartridge style would work.

Don't forget eye protection. They're cheaper than a respirator, more comfortable than a respirator, if something gets in your eye it puts you out of commission immediately, and buffers sling stuff everywhere...no matter how careful you are.


I'll be watching this thread 'cause I've started using a buffer instead of a tumbler and I'm have shoddy results using hardware store Dico emery and tripoli followed by a big unknown chunk of CrOx.

I use Fomax compounds that I ordered from Caswell Plating. I've never used any other brand of compound; the Fomax seems to work well.

Same here. 3M. Parts are always available and it's a reputable company.

I got the 3M 6800 full facepiece and 3M's 7500 half piece one.

I've always used Formax greaseless with zero issues.

I use my positive air helmets that I got for woodturning. My biggest fear with this process is not the flying particles, but rather the oils and superfine particles that are aerosolized during the formation. I like the helmets because of their great visibility, impact protection and filtration value. Biggest issue with the helmets are the cost.
