What do you mean by "making wedges"? Wedges have more steel than a half hollow, so I can't imagine what you are doing.
If you're using large diameter wheels 6"- 8" & not getting inside the hollow all the grinding force will be on the edge & spine. How wide are the blades before & after ? Sounds like you're losing a lot of metal to approach a wedge shape.
That or they are buffing the belly out of the hollow grind and making 1/4 wedges
I'm pretty sure hes saying that hes been grinding down/rounding the spine, probably shortening the razors edge, and not getting into the hollows of the razors.
Glenn has a good post about how to push the razor into the wheel to stop the edge part. It might be in the stickies. As far as getting into the hollow of the razor, the only ways I know to get up in there are to use a smaller wheel or go long ways on the buffers. Keep in mind I make no claims to buffer mastery, so take this with a grain of salt.
