What are the scales made of? They look laminated. Nice work.
these are gaboon ebony and yellow wood. Done with two pen blanks, wood glue and a table saw
They look nice, my only concern is that the spacer/wedge may be a little thick. If you have a 1/4 hollow I'm sure they will do just fine...Gaboon Ebony is one of my favorite woods to work with, it's gorgeous as well. Again, nice work!
Thank you, I actually had to remake the wedge to the one you see because the previous one was too thin. I'm working with a Wostenholm 5/8" and the tang is thinner than the spine, making it difficult because I didn't bend the scales to accommodate. When the wedge was thinner, the blade wouldn't sit all the way into the scales, and now it fits snug. All that's left is to polish the blade up!

Awesome thread! I've had pretty good success using Minwax Tung Oil. I usually do six coats or so. It leaves a nice satiny finish without covering up the original wood characteristics. I also keep a big mason jar of the stuff that I soak scales in for a few weeks. When I take them out, I give them a good wipe and buff them with fine steel wool once they're dry.
