DMT Dia Sharp - Dia-Flat Plate Lapping plate 10" x 4"

I purchased one of these massive 10" x 4" lapping plates.

Is this safe to use on my fine 1.2k 6k 10k and 12k stones or my shapton glass stones???? It feels more suitable for your 1k grit stones and below. This thing is extremely course, on the web page it said it is 120 microns. It feel about 120 grit.

So now after receiving it I'm worried it's too course!!!!!!!!!!


If anyone has experience with one of these beasts can you let me know your opinions!

I have the D8XX 120 and have used it to do the lion's share on a synthetic 1k and above. When I finish I usually draw another pencil grid and give it a going over with a D8C 325. On naturals when I do lap them I stick with the 325. I know at least one honemeister who prefers the feel of his stones after lapping on one of the XX 120s. He finds stones lapped on the 325 feel too smooth. So say that to say, you won't know until you try. As long as you lap correctly you won't hurt anything.

An aside:

From my experience the DMTs seem to leave a smoother finish than their 'grit' rating would suggest.

I recently flattened a La Verte coticule and a BBW with the DMT 325, then finished the lapping with some 600 'grit' silicon carbide paper.

I was quite surprised when the carbide paper left the surface of the stones looking and feeling less smooth than with the DMT 325 !

I am not sure if this is to do with the various 'grit' scales, but the effect was quite obvious !

Don’t forget to break in your new DMT they sometimes have the odd stray high diamond which needs bedding in. For the life of me I can’t remember how I did this to mine. I’m sure somebody on here will be able to help.

I closed my eyes (not literally) and lapped my 6k... There are circles all over it. mmmm so i though i would do the same to my 10k lol. It didn't turn out any worse then my 6k.... I think i need a 320grit stone tough to finish it off.. maybe??

You could just get some 320 wet n dry sandpaper and lap on some glass or other flat surface if you dont want to fork out for another DMT, works fine. Hone Lapping 101 - Straight Razor Place Wiki

Thats how i was previously lapping them... But i like toys and i like perfection, not that the sand paper didn't work well but it was messy lol

I don't think the 320grit DMT stones are worth much are they? But i guess the real question should be.. will it work as good or better then sandpaper? and i need something that will lap the shapton glass stones.. will sandpaper even lap those suckers?
