I felt this would be useful for some of us. I have pecan trees on my property and would like to make scales using one of the trees that had to come down.

Pecan is also very nice to use in the grill as well...
Nice idea, I have one of those bleeders around somewhere. I love low-tech stuff like that.
I'll weight in on this one. We put together a unit like this in my shop about a year ago as we have lots of fun tinkering around and making our own homegrown equipment. It's been used with good results on smaller sets of scales for knives. I have looked for a taller jar to use for razor but have not had any success as of yet so for now I will just have to be satisfied to purchase my scale material for razors already done.
How about a Snapple bottle, or other similar drink that comes in a wide-mouthed glass metal-capped bottle? I think I remember seeing some type of drink in a good sized glass bottle at the grocery store, maybe something like orange juice or iced tea? I have a 1Gal glass jug that had BBQ sauce in it that I converted into a Hydrogen generator. I suggest going to the grocery and wandering around for a little while.
!!!noob question alert!!!
What is the purpose of this? is this one of those necessary steps or is it just a good thing to do?
Hmmm, I just typed a very long winded response to this, which included my alluding to how I made hydrogen, but without the proper training, it would be pretty easy to inhale some nasty fumes, or blow your ear drums out, so I cut that part. Let's just say hydrogen goes boom when mixed in a stoichiometric ratio.
Hydrogen goes boom anywhere from 5% to 95% concentration in air, there's no need to confine yourself to the stoiciometric ratio if you're just trying to remove your eyebrows.
How I know is easy. By trade I'm an industrial electrician with additional certs for working with explosion rated equiptment in hazardous environments (petro-chemical, gas, dust etc).
I also did a lot of "experiments" as a kid. My eyebrows were never very old.
