Nuts and Bolts and Washers oh my From Microfasteners...

This is a common PM I and probably most other Professional restorers get in our pm box...

Hi. Need some info please.

I went to micro fasteners and was not sure of what to get to mock up scales. Im talking about the screws and nuts to fit and sand. can you tell me what works for you. size,length head type. It will save me some head scratching and wasted bread. thank you so much.

So instead of answering it just in the pm I put together a complete shopping list, this was done in the Workshop Sticky about 3 -4 years ago but it is outdated now so I will add this thread to it...

This is everything I normally have on hand to not only Mock Up scales but also for washers to build Stacked, Domed & Singles...

I tried to make it pretty detailed

Bolts: Hex Head Machine Screws - Brass - Micro Fasteners

These HBB00121000-80 x 3/4$ 8.70

Nuts: Hex Nuts - Brass - Micro Fasteners

These as they are easier to use for mock up

HNB00801000-805/32 .046$ 4.10

If you have any intention of using them for real then get these little ones

HNBS0080500-80 scale3/32 .048$ 9.90

Washers: Flat Washers - Brass - Micro Fasteners

Get all these in brass for in and out

FWB0100#0.064 1/8 .017$ 3.80

FWBW0100#0 wide.064 3/16 .017$ 4.40

In SS Flat Washers - Stainless - Micro Fasteners

Get these

FWSS0100#0 Narrow Washer S/S I.D. .062xO.D..125x Thk .017$ 2.20

FWS00100#0$ 2.20

If you are going to actually use these for pivots then you need the wrenchs (2) and you need to call for those they are 3/32 hex these might be listed online now I haven't checked in years...

This is very helpful. One of the old posts listed the wrong part number and it took a confusing call to microfastners to figure everything out. This post will save folks a lot of time. Thanks.

Honestly we most all make our own pins from 1/16 Brass and Nickel Silver rods... I know Dovo, TI, and Revisor, offer their pins for sale (if you can find them and afford them)

Most any Knife Supplier will stock the rods also many TrueValue Hardware stores have the Brass rod in their K&S display
I have heard that some good Hobby Stores (Look for R/C supplies) carry both rods too, although I have never been that lucky to find one :(

Thanks. I was using the term "pin" loosely -- I too have been making pins from 1/16 brass stock. I notice that places like knifemaking.com sell the nickel silver rods, but they don't sell the micro washers. In a perfect world, we could buy all the materials from one source. It sounds like from your post that no "one source" option exists. Bummer. Thanks again for a great post.

I always have a hard time locating a place to buy the collars for the pins. Washers and rods are easy, but those tiny (and easy to lose) locking washers are very hard to find. I had to buy a bunch of pre-made pin sets from Classic Shave just to get some collars.

Right now I have a buddy making them out of his shop, but the cost and time isnt going to last long. Does anybody else know where to get just these parts?

Not pre-made, I have made them myself in the past using a #00 and doming it, but, now with the smaller #0's I don't bother any longer to even use them...

The cool little wrench that Miniature Hex Socket Wrench that MicroFasteners offers is:

part# WR0 Miniature Hex Socket Wrench.

They are about $4.50 each. Should order at least two, if not four. I like two for the shop, two for inside the house where I play with razors.

Hey,
I am re-pinning a Boker blade that had a tube. I was going to use a 3/32 rod without the tube to fit the hole in the blade. Would I need a #2 washer from microfasteners to get the right inside diameter for the 3/32 rod? Or would it be better to find a 3/32 tube with a 1/6 rod and the #0 washers for inside and out?

Thanks to all for this excellent info.! I just ordered all of the above from micro-fasteners, got my pinstock from Jantz, and my greaseless comounds and wheels. I already have all the buffers and other tools I need in my son's knife-making workshop. Now I plan to dive into razor restoration on all the awesome old razors I've bought the last few months-I can't wait!

Micro Fasteners will provide most of all the washers etc. that you will need. Check the SRP wiki for any other items you require. Patience.

I have a couple straight razors I am making and like the idea of using micro fasteners. My question is this. The blade steel I am using is 1/4 inch at it's thickest point "spine" . So, with that in mind . and the Scales being say a little less that a 1/4 of an inch , will the above micro screws work ? I am just trying to get "exactly" what I need before I order so as to not have to return any items . All help appreciated.

Order the 1 inch and trim them to fit

I ordered all on the list. I should be able to make it work. Using wood for scales so I can always sand them thinner

I Know this is a very old thread but one note to everyone that is reading it now. The brass nuts will need a 5/32 hex nut driver for the mock up nuts. If you got the others for permanent attachment they are 3/32
