So my next question is......how do you and what do you use to space the tang?
Ya, I've never had a scale touch the tang.
I always use a bearing washer on the tang which helps some.
When I make a wedge I first start with a longer piece of material (~3")
I then lay the scale over the wedge and mark the shape and hole. I start by rough shaping on a band saw and belt sander leaving ~1/16" out side the line. I then drill the hole at 5/64".
I take a caliper to the razor at the point where I want it to sit in the scales and sand down the wedge to that thickness. Then I taper to approximately the same angle as the tang.
With this system the wedge has always worked out in the first fitting. After it is formed I mount the wedge then hand sand down to the final shape.
