Just received a Simmons Hdwe 421 I bought on fleabay.
The "good condition" includes an approximately a 1/8" "tear" in the blade in about the middle of the edge

My question is, what can I do with it? I know it's not useable in its current condition, so what are my options?
make it in to a spanish point coochie razor.
You'll be an expert (and very tired) honer when you're done with this one.
Well, I got it cheap, so my current plan is to salvage the scales to make a plastic bladed "razor" for my grandson and trash the blade
Well, despite my facetiousness, I would give it a shot. When you're finished, it might be a nice little razor for touch-ups.

If it is a 5/8 razor it will end up at 4/8 or smaller.
You will have to reduce the stabilizers in the heal
so they do not interfere.
When the crack is gone tape the spine and
lay the razor flat in the normal honing position
and set the bevel. Then remove the tape and
reset the bevel... through 1k and finish hone.
My track record of about 6 broken razors is about 50/50 save versus trash.
Some steel is good a long way back from the edge and if you have one of
those and the crack does not grow. It might be OK.
Once you get the chip out you can always use it to practice
stropping and honing.
Do you have any recourse with the seller, or are you happy with the unshavable blade?
Well, it has a 7 day return, the draw back is that it is for the sale price only ($1.30) and will cost me more than that to return it
There's a new thread in the restoration section, I believe, of someone that just cuts off the damaged portion of the blade and turns it into a mini razor. It might be handy in reaching some places on your face.
for the record - if you plan on throwing that blade away, throw it in my direction :)
I'll see if I can make a smaller pocket razor out of it.

My razors are all flea market purchases. My best (Sunday flea market in Maastricht) has a deep tear near the heel. I just strop and shave with the rest of the blade. Is there something I should or can do to prevent the tear from spreading?
I do it kinda the same, but a little different. I scribe the blade to follow the spine what ever it might be. I then go to a 1" belt sander and without heating the blade I grind the split out gently, and then regrind the shoulder and straighten the spine if need be. Now I do a little bread kniving on 600 Dmt. then start the honing process. The reason I use the 1" belt sander is that I can usually control the split from running and if it doesn't I haven't lost much time.
