I finally got a W&B For Barber's Only from the Bay without breaking my bank.
I made a set of custom scales for it from walnut, maple, cherry, and purple heart.
Here's a picture of the scales, I will post a picture of the finished razor after assembly.
I am still waiting for the scales to dry.
Sorry for the blurry photos, the finished razor pics will be better.

Dude there's an optical illusion or something... My wife said it looks as big as the chair. She was wondering if it was a rifle stock... Looks good though!!
Very nice!you don't see people do that very much.. Great way to put all those woods to work.
Nice look. Excellent use of the different timbers. How are the timbers joined? Are they just butted together or do they have a common core?
I layered the wood like a sandwich and used gorrilla glue and high clamping pressure.
It looked like a big piece of crap after initial gluing with bleed out and everything but a couple passes through the planer and the band saw and it was beautiful. I still have enogh of the stockto make another set of scales.
In answer to one of the other questions they are 6 1/4" long. Here's a couple more pics with it inside drying now.

Nice, I went through Valdosta on the way to FLorida this past summer, neat place. Be sure to show us the end result with the blade in place, just curious because I too have a 'For Barbers Use' W&B, but it's just a 7/8ths.

Here the scales are with the W&B Razor use only blade.
I am leaving the patina on the blade for now but might polish her up later.
What is the consencus? Polished or patina'd, please give your opinions to help me out!!!

Beautiful work as usual!! My opinion? Put a mirror shine on that thing and it would remind me of what it may have looked like in a showcase at a barber's convention in 1882!! It would have been the envy of every barber for 200 miles around.
Man that turned out nice. I think it will look good either way, but shiny is awfully eye-catching.
Once again Scott impresses me! Im glad to own a couple pieces of your artwork!
Very nice work there. Just my opinion but I always like the polished look :)
If you polish the blade, the scales need to be glossier, IMO.
As is, with the mixture of woods the scales need to be glossy, IMO.
So... The blade needs to be polished, IMO.
I like the mixture of woods, and the way it's put together.
I don't understand the notch in the middle. It is not needed for function, and the curve doesn't "go" with anything else. It appears to me to be a notch for the sake of having a notch. Additionally it seems odd, to me, to see a right angle on the blade in the middle of the curved cut out in the scales.
I put the notch there because I liked the way it allowed sight "through" the razor, you don't expect it to be like that. Basically I put it there for the exact reason you feel it's "odd".Quote:

I like the matte finish on the scales, I also prefer satin finish over mirror on blades, so I would say maybe clean the blade a little, but no high gloss polishing. Just my humble opinion.
Nice job with the scales. The only possible issue I can see is the length of the scales past the pivot...Are you having any difficulty while stropping or honing?
It felt odd at first (just during stropping) but it was no problem getting used to.
