So I watched undream22's youtube videos detailing a step-by-step restoration of a straight, and he's using a variable speed delta bench buffer set at 1700 rpm. Now, I cannot find one of these locally at anything approaching an affordable price (for me). But I did see a 3600 rpm bench buffer at Harbor Freight that I can afford. 6" Buffer
So, the question: Can this be used for blade restoration, or do I have to save up for a variable/low speed one that i'll have to order online?

Checked out the threads. Nothing specifically addressing the RPM issue (unless I missed it entirely; a distinct possibility). So, if I go with the higher RPM buffer, is it just a matter of me having to dip the blade in ice water more often? Or will it just ruin the blade if I even attempt to go that route?

RPM is only part of the equation, surface speed is the important calculation...

I use the HF Buffers with 4 inch wheels I have done a razor or two on them :) I also have 1725 RPM buffers, one thing to really understand is that you control the heat with your actions... The higher speed wheels just need a more delicate touch, remember we are not polishing engine parts here, they are razors everything about them require a delicate touch...

Speed in RPM and FPS are also related to the size of the wheel. You can safely use 4 inch buffing wheels with 3650 RPM. The FPS will be similar to 6inch at 1750. Do the math, if you wish. I did it some time back, but did not save the data. The Delta two speed is available at Home Depot for around $80.
In fact, Glen please correct me if I'm wrong, these buffers from Harbor Freight are regularly on sale and even when they are not you may be able to convince them that you missed the sale.

The 4 inch gets me into where I want buffing spine to edge and keeps the surface speed down...

any thought about using the denim wheels in the future?
My buffer runs at 2750 rpm and I run 4" wheels. I haven't had any problems managing it to date. I used to run sisal wheels for greaseless compound but I'm in the process of switching to cotton. I find that the compound sticks to cotton a lot better and I get a better result. Also, make sure your wheels have a sturdy leather centre to stop them expanding or you'll go through them very quickly.

I've used denim wheels. They were pretty good but the ones I got didn't have the reinforced centre hole so they didn't last long.
