Hi, all. I'm having no luck finding a source for acetate tortoise shell in 1 /8" thickness. Masecraft and Texas Knifemakers Supply appear to be out of stock and I've had no luck with optical houses(eyeglass suppliers) or luthiers supply (guitar makers). Does anybody know where I might find a supply of this material. I'm not opposed to using celluloid material, but thought the acetate would be better for the "cell rot" factor. Any help is appreciated. Thanks
Did you call Phil @ Masecraft many times they have it but haven't updated the website and store...
Glen, hadn't thought to call Masecraft. Their website is not real navigable, but they do seem to have a lot of goodies. I'll give them a call here in a while. Thanks for the tip.
I just (well 2 months ago) picked some cellulose tortoise shell of the ebay... eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices
Def give a call to Masecraft. I stopped using the site simply because I can drive to their shop, but they have a TON that is not even mentioned on the site. If they dont have it they can tell you when they can get it for you.
Jumbojohnny, thanks for the heads up on Masecraft. I've heard nothing but good about these people. I've been calling for a few days now, but apparently the early snowstorm has caught them off guard and the phone systems are down. I tried calling again this morning but both numbers just keep ringing through without answer. I'm persistant, so I'll keep trying. In the meantime I've located what I think may be the sole manufacturer of faux tortoise shell product in the United States. Her name is Colette Hanson from Bloomington, Indiana, and from what I understand she makes a very believable epoxy faux tortoiseshell product called Tor-tis for the luthier suppliers. Her product is very thin and not suitable for razor handles but I understand that she is very workable and has/will produce 1/8" thick pieces. I also understand that she can duplicate natural shell patterns to your specification. I have yet to contact her, but when I do I will pass the information along in this thread for all.
