I'm going to restore a Engels razor and need to put new scales on it. The metal caps on the end are in good shape, so I'd like to save them and put them on new wooden scales. Does anyone have advice on how to get the fancy metal caps off the old scales and put them on the new ones without damaging them?
soak um in acetone.
So then are they glued on, and acetone will dissolve the glue?
If celluloid or even some plastics,it will melt the scales making the bolsters easy to remove

My junk pile isn't deep enough to supply my desires. Yet.
When I get my Jewelers bench and equipment moved I could make you a custom casted set, or find someone local to you to get a set cast.
My plan is to make some adjustable for tension pins and fasteners so the handles can stay tight while sharpening or using the razor or removing the scales made easy on/off they will be unlike anything seen so far and will be one of my trademarks.
Cast as in Sterling Silver? I have a bit of that I could use, never tried casting it.
I have worked lead wheel weights into 9mm slugs. My father reloads ammo. He has a bucket of damaged brass that would supply lots of metal.
Humm, a Quick Disconnect feature? That would allow cleaning in one of the weak points on vintage straights - the pivot hole. I hope you succeed!
Just find a razor going cheap on ebay that has bolsters. Should be an easy find.
