Im in the market for a bandsaw but im on a limited budget and im a complete nubee. Im interested in a Sears: Online department store featuring appliances, tools, fitness equipment and more Craftsman 10" bench top bandsaw. Will that suit me for making scales or do I need to go with something larger?

I have the Ryobi 9" BS903 from HomeDepot, at $149.99 I usually go to them, simply because they have a 30 day no questions tool guarantee. If you don't like it, take it back for a full refund, even if the tool is used. BTW, it works great.
Its not a bad place for those of us who are not in the market for Generals or Jets.
Or, for 11.99, you could buy a coping saw. You may find it makes you swear more often, but it will also do.

Thanks gents! Im going to make the leap . After wet sanding for hours the last couple of days,I got great results. With that success I have decided to move on to the next level... So today I built a nice work table in the garage and will start furnishing it with tools slowly . The first thing is going to be the band saw and soon after that a belt sander . I dont think Ill need a grinder anytime soon. Im going to continue to sand and polish the blades by hand and will make the scales with the saw and sander...Baby steps.
I have the exact same one and it's a very solid, excellent performing bandsaw. I don't use it as much anymore since I have a metal cutting one but I still occasionally use it with great ease and satisfaction.Quote:

Thanks Max Im going to go pick it up today . This is your fault by the way . After seeing what magic you did with my razors I had to give it a shot! between all the threads in the workshop and the generosity of gents like yourself and Glen Im of to a good start. Im hand sanding a Gebr and a Le Grelot that were in really bad cosmetic shape but are looking great now. Ill be sure to post pics soon.Quote:

Just my two cents,I haunt tool auctions,Guys for not alot you can buy a nice old american made delta 14 inch real bandsaw,This one not enc.the kreg fence was 90 bux.
New paint,new guides,new bearings cost me 45 bux and a weekends work,are tons of parts on the bay.
Is a workhorse that will last you a lifetime.

Just got back from sears .Bought the 10 inch craftsman, I was able to get it marked down from $199 to $169. ordered some G10 and looking at some bone & wood as well(wow that just didn't sound right). Headed out to Home Depot with SWMBO to get some paint samples for her and a 4oz balpeen hammer for me.
And yeah I puled the old "Hey didn't you want me to paint the hallway upstairs?" trick to tone down the "Are you spending more money on razors? Didn't you just buy a bunch ? Now you want to make them?" questions. LOL
I heard this a number of times once the RAD got me. Now she encourages me to do it because I am spending signifcantly less on sports memorabilia.Quote:
