Today I begin my first true TOTAL restoration.
Not even sure what it is yet, but I have decided to name it Fox (Ferrous Oxide) get it?
Poor thing was in the bottom of a toolbox in a damp basement for who knows how long. I had to pry it open!
Lets see what I can do to... I mean WITH it!

Curiosity and chemistry(Fox :rofl2:) led me to this thread. Please keep us posted on your progress. It'll be interesting to see what you have there.
Thats an ambitious restoration, but I'm sure it will make a great before and after pic when your finished.

a little polish on a 12k and she will be as good as new!
Today is hand sanding day. just to get the rough stuff off and I can take stock of the situation. Razor is stamped...

Anybody have any info on the maker?
Some hand sanding, and some free hand grinding. a bit of greaseless just to see what it might look like. The pitting goes fairly deep, I dont think it will be possible to remove it all without turning a wedge into a full hollow!
Opinions? ( I know the pics suck, stupid shiny making me)

I have faith it'll get there too. I do the same thing to rusted down old camping lanterns, or stoves....
Anybody have any thoughts or advice on how to proceed from here? How best to minimize the "shiny pits" syndrome?
Hi all,
I'm a little curious about honing. Not honing in the sense of restoring damaged blades and using a progression of upteen different stones, but just something for touching up--perhaps like CrOx and diamond spray, or maybe a little more than that. If I were to invest in one stone--one stone only--which one would you recommend and why?

In the wrong place, but get a norton 4/8k and a strop with CrOx. You could invest in tons of options, but that is pretty much all you would need to refresh a blade. the other option is to get a nice barbers hone and the CrOx strop.

Don't spend tons of time on a blade if you can't set a bevel. Been there done that!#@^@^#^
There looks like there is some pretty decent pitting right down in the cutting edge. This might be a show stopper in terms of making thus into a good shaver. As the other guys said, have a go at setting the bevel and see how bad the pitting is.

Progress report. a bone numbing amount of honing later, its still not quite there, but it IS close. and I do believe the last pitting will be cleared with just a bit more. Attachment 87121

Something fishy is going on here, either:
Your hone needs flatening
Your not using rolling x stroke
The spine on your razor is bent.
I suspect a combination of the first two, only because I have made a razor look exactly like this when I tried to use an old chisel hone to set my bevel.
All in all its an incredible transformation!
Or, the steel is just shallower in the center on that side, because the rust was so much more severe, that when removed, it left a dent in it!
I'd call it a result of non-symmetrical grinding.

If so that explains the "bone numbing" bit.
Do not be bashful -- use tape and hone the edge
more than the spine... that can save you a week.
It looks like the spine defines a nice flat base so
you should be OK taping it at this point. Magic marker
can help you see your progress as you close in
on the bevel
These old blades can shave like a charm.
Oh Lord no! Even I am not THAT insane! The carbo was just on hand when I was looking for a background to provide enough "sharp" relief to make the edge more visible in the photo.
The rust on this poor blade was very extensive, along with the corresponding pitting. I am attempting to maintain as much of the original shape as possible, but the more I sand, the less that seems to be working.
I think this is about as good as she's gonna get.
