Looking for help with scales

I tried search a couple of ways, but searching for 'scales' on this site is like looking for water in the ocean. Lol. Couldn't think of how to word it for it to come up the way I need it so I gave up after 30 minutes of trying.

I want to talk to someone about the pros and cons of using horn or wood for a razor. I also am looking for someone who makes scales. I thought about making my own, but I don't really have the tools and can't justify them to my better half. I have a W&B that is about 6/8" with a barber notch that I'd like to have scales put on. The scales that it had, were not in good condition. My first thought was to put horn scales, in a 'marbled' color, for lack of a better discription.

Ive tried to contact someone locally but they haven't responded yet. It's only been a few days, I'm just impatient. LOL

For horn the pros are that it is not affected by water.
Cons: horn can change shape over time.

For wood the pro's are it will not change shape over time.
Cons: not good enough water resistance for all woods.

Now all that I said is very general statement, because when the scales are executed properly they should last for life.
When the horn is of quality it should not change shape over time IMO.
Wood when properly finished should be water resistant enough to last. There are some woods that are naturally oily and do not need much finishing other than looks to last.

For me there is no advantage for one over the other, one can't go wrong either way, so if I were to choose I'd pick whichever is more appealing to me.

Have you considered synthetic materials for scales by the way?

I didn't really give too much thought to synthetic. No reason, just wood or horn is what I had in mind. I'll check the Member services. I had a brain freeze, and didn't think to check there. I'm only recently starting to lurk here again as I find my AD's increase exponentially every time I visit. :lurk:
