Irreparable Damage?

Hi, I've been shaving with a safety razor for a long time, and I recently decided to switch to a straight razor. I thought it would be nice to get an older razor, just because the concept seemed nice to me...I went ahead and bought a Goldedge on ebay that wasn't documented very well...I knew I was taking a gamble, but the pictures made it seem like it might be repairable (the seller was selling it more as an antique than a razor though...). I ended up paying $30 dollars...

I just got it in the mail, and it seems to have been poorly used/honed...or something...the blade has a sort of "S" shape to it. I really like the look of it, and think that I could clean it up pretty well, but I was wondering if the damage to the blade could never be undone (I think it is doubtful). Could somebody with a little more experience (I have none...) tell me what they think about the possibilities of this blade?

That "S" is excessive, and improper hone wear. I hate to say it, but that one's a lost cause, IMO. That blade has too many issues to overcome; excessive, improper hone wear, rust, pitting. I don't think it'll ever shave again.

This blade could be made shavable, but only after considerable work and it would certainly never ever be pretty.........

Thank you for your quick responses...I'll definitely check up with some experts before I take a risk like that next time...

...time to browse the listings for something that is somewhat cheap, good-looking...and most importantly SHAVEABLE...
(I know good-looking shouldn't be up there on my list at this stage in the game...but it is so hard to not try for it!)

Hi Ryan. You have 4 great guys to buy razors from right now. Bill, Joe, Lynn and Gary. The first four posts to your thread. All are selling razors right now. Don't get sucked in by Ebay (I know from whence I speak. She's an evil mistress.)

Well, if Lynn, Joe, and Bill all say it's bin-worthy, I think you have to figure it's meant for the trash heap.

Nenad's right, though - save the scales if they're in good shape. And if you buy a razor from any of the people mentioned above, or probably from anyone on this forum, you'll get a quality, usable piece that you can enjoy.

Wow, look at those scales! Nice.

(notice no mention of that blade....It's shot. OR, not worth the effert to restore) I've noticed that hone pattern happens when someone had a 'heavy hand' as they come across the hone. Most of the pressure/exposure to the hone is in the middle of the blade and hone, causing the metal to be removed from that area.

When the 'heavy handedness' is at the end of the stroke across the hone, you see the blade go more to a point, with most of the metal removed from the tip.

OK, I'm done with my little soap-box observation.

You could probably salvage those scales, and get at least 1/2 your cash back. Every now and then you have someone looking for a set of dubl duck scales.....Them's is those!

As has been noted, salvaging the scales on this one is a good idea. You might be able to find another DD with a good blade and crap scales, and marry the two.

Thanks for the advice...I was definitely not planning on throwing it away, as it is a beautiful piece...no matter how worthless it might be. I will definitly look into getting a new blade for it.

I actually just bought the "Imperial" Army and Navy from Gary....all I need is my strop and some paste and I'll be ready to go...
