Spine wear from buffing?

I have been messing around with buffing for a couple weeks and I keep finding that when using greaseless compounds I am getting faux-honewear on the spine. I am buffing horizontally with 4" wheels and being carefull to keep it straight although I have been more concerned with keeping the edge free from the buffer. It seems like when I buff straight on I am still hitting the spine first which is resulting in the wear. Any advice on how to avoid this? Also how much will it affect honing?

Try buffing the long way on the blade.

If your getting spine wear from buffing,you are WAY over doing it.Your not buffing,your grinding.

I don't usually do much buffing on the spine - I buff into the hollow just below the spine.

I do know, from some of my first razors I buffed, that if you're wearing the spine on the buffer, it will be uneven - making it difficult to hone, and giving a very ugly uneven wear pattern.

+1 on this, and try not to touch the spine at all with the greaseless or even black emory compounds, they can add "hone wear" in a hurry.

First, get either a Micrometer or a set of good Calipers and measure before, during, and after, so you get an idea of what is and isn't really happening...
Second, in here someplace are some pics I did for other's showing the hold to not only buff as safely as possible going spine to edge, but how to not frown the edge and not burn the spine... (I don't know quite where they are as it wasn't my thread but seach gssixgun & buffing and you should find it)

Mostly you just need more practice on how to work the razor on the buffers, whether you are buffing heel to toe or spine to edge should not make a difference, in fact you should learn to buff both ways and on the diagonal if you want to get the best finishes...

Brad/undream has a fantasic vid on here that shows it very well too, search it out...

By your description your wheels are not the correct diameter and instead of buffing the hollow you are buffing primarily the spine and close to the edge. You can modify your technique to get in the hollow and avoid the spine.
