I told my dad I needed to buy an anvil. So he went out to the garage and pulled out a small anvil my great grand father had cut from a piece of rail road track (he was a machinist). He said when he was a kid he remembered my great grand father had it polished to a high mirror shine and the bottom painted red. I see why he made it out of a railroad track because that is some seriously strong and hard steel. Perfect for what I needed.

I wish I had some kind of heirloom...I got a Blue tip Gillete DE from my fiancee's grandfather's estate, but I cleaned it and had it replated and gave it to my soon to be father in-law since it was his father's. Now its his only everyday shaver.
For light work, railroad anvils are wonderful. And the fact that is a sweet peice of family history, indeed, "Priceless"

For light work, they are indeed great.
My first anvial was a piece of railroad with an 8x4 steel plate welded on top.
It was used by a local blacksmith when he went to horse competitions, for shoeing horses.
Very portable, and very practical.
Nice anvil but does it all sleep in the bed with you?

I have heard recently that this is easier said then done. Be sure to get plenty of abrasive and wait for a long weekend. The stuff is hard!!!Quote:

Bead blast the base,and upper sides,find a machine shop to surface grind the top (one pass it will look like new)
Mask, paint the sides,great project,or just do it all by hand.
