I have recently acquired an old wedge-blade which I believe needs to be reground. (The spine and cutting edge combine to cover nearly 25% of the sides of the blade.) While the only thing particularly special about the razor would be its age (circa 1770?), I have actually grown quite fond of it, and would love to facilitate its continued active service. Does anyone know who does this in the US?

If you can get a shave edge on it, as is, my philosophy is, go with it!

While Ross Cutlery's web-site states the cost is $16, upon calling them, I was informed that the cost is $22. That still doesn't seem terrible.
As for why I wish to have the razor reground:
I am not able to get a shaving edge on this piece at present, and upon investivation under magnification, it appears that some genious along the way decided to sharpen it at a different angle. It appears that I would have to hone most of the tiny remaining concave away in order to get to the point of a being a practicle shaving edge.
Believe me, if I did not believe it was necessary in order to use the razor, I would not be looking to have it reground.

Would that be Joe Chandler, or Joe Lerch? I could certainly drop him a message and see what he thinks. The scales on this razor need some work, but I think I want to try to tackle that part myself. I have done detail work of assorted types, with assorted materials, and think I would really enjoy that part of the work. I think on this particular piece, I will try to restore the current (original) horn scales to the greatest extent possible. I hope to eventually get into custom work (on newer razors), but at this juncture school keeps me so busy, I simply haven't adequate time to dedicate to such an undertaking. Does anyone have a suggestion for where to acquire brass pins at a fair price?

here is an ebay auction for 1/16" brass rod stock, the same stuff a lot of us use for pinning. The seller also sells 1/16" nickel-silver rod in case you prefer to go that route.
If you also need washers, check out www.microfasteners.com and look for the #0 brass washers. #0 wide may also be of interest.
Agreed. I've heard from Joe Chandler that the regrind service from Ross Cutlery promised a shave ready blade, but did not deliver. I'm expecting a few regrinds from Joe and from what I've seen... Well Hot Damn! I'll post pics when I've got them in my hands!Quote:

Randy these crappy pics don't do the work justice. After getting this back I sent him two more to do. That's how impressed I was.....the blade was much rougher than the before pic shows.Quote:

I'm somewhat limited in the size blades I can do, but if it's a wedge ground blade, between 11/16 and 7/8, I can regrind it usually. I don't have any wedges in the above size left at my house with any wear remaining. :D I charge $25 to regrind, including hand honing/testing. I have actually reground a 15/16 W&B, but it had a much heavier spine than normal, with a grind that started lower on the blade, so it worked with my equipment. I don't think I could do it normally.
Joe, how about sub-5/8 wedges, maintaining a wedge profile, without hollowing them out?
Well, theoretically it's possible. The thing is, I maintain a wedge profile on a 7/8 without exceeding the original hollow too much. On a sub 5/8 blade, it definitely wouldn't hollow too much...in fact, it would be nearly flat, due to the minimum amount of wheel arc it would contact. What I'm afraid of doing a blade that small would be thinning the spine, because it would be tough to turn the edge into the wheel enough that it wouldn't contact the spine without putting too extreme a bevel angle on, if that makes any sense. It would force the razor to assume an almost axe-shaped profile, too thick to cut properly, or if I thinned the whole thing out, it would be almost dead flat, and the spine would have to be thinned. It would be tough to maintain the proper spine thickness to width honing ratio. I guess basically what I'm saying is that I'm sure I could do it, but the razor might lose some of it's shaving ability. It might work just fine, it's just that a 9-inch wheel is really, IMO, too big to do a blade that size properly. For that size blade I'd really need about a 7-inch wheel. If I can ever save up enough fundage to buy that new grinder I've been drooling over for the last 4 years, I plan to have every contact wheel size available so that I can do anything, up to and including full hollows, and start making my own. I know how to grind. I'm just limited by equipment at the moment. This is a long-winded way of saying what I said in the PM. :DQuote:
